Trash or Treasure: eBay for Dummies (01/24/09)

This morning my version of "ebay for Dummies". What I run into alot when I'm out doing my appraising is I find that people don't know how to use ebay and they get prices that are not correct for their items. For the purpose of this particular segment this morning I've chosen a Hummel figurine entitled "To Market". Now you'll notice that this one is listed at $500, and that price is way off! And, that's what happens to people when they try to use ebay. Let me go ahead and take you thru the ebay process real quick...this is the 1st screen that you'll see when you pull up ebay. Now, when you pull this screen up, and if you're not registered with ebay...right over here I've made a "red arrow" there, that reads "Register". The registering process with ebay is extremely simple and here's what it looks like. Right here on the top it says "Hi ready to register with ebay", again very simple it's going to ask you some personal questions that are NOT very extensive, they're just pretty general. But the main thing they're getting is your email address and then they're re-confirming here. Ok, then below that it's asking you to set a "User name or User ID" and our "Password". So, that's what we're doing and then once we've done that we hit "Complete" and it takes us to this next page. Most people make the mistake of en- tering their item here in this top block and then hitting "Search", and then you're going to get all these listings with possibly inaccurate prices, because that's not what items sell for. What I want you to do is just hit "ADVANCED SEARCH", OK hit that and then you're going to get the Advanced Search page. Then again up here at the top leave all this blank here, and then just below that you're going to see "Search: Find Item" and right there it says "Enter Keyword or Item Number", so enter your item here that you want to research. Now just below that and the most important thing there are 3 boxes, the 1 in the middle reads "SHOW COMPLETED LISTINGS ONLY" and those are completed auctions; these are things that have actually sold or have tried to sell on ebay. So check that one and then when you do that it's going to give you this page reading "Completed Items Search" and it's wanting your user ID/Name, put that in and your password, and click the blue box "Sign In". And then you're going to get a page like this which will show you what items have finished at and not what they were just listed for but have actually tried to sell for on ebay. Now note, prices in RED mean the item did NOT sell. On the bottom down here I've got 1 in GREEN which means the item actually SOLD. So the market value on this particular Hummel "To Market" is actually about $90 when you get down to it, not $500 like we saw in the 1 listing, but actually $90.
