Hummel Figurines: Past, Present & Future

The Hummel Figurine community is known as a substantial collection of religious and iconic figurines based on the drawings by a german nun named Maria Innocentia Hummel (typically abbreviated and trademarked as M.I. Hummel).
The works of Sister Maria were discovered by the porcelain manufacturer Franz Goebel, who had been creating works in a firm near the town of Oeslauby in Germany back in 1876. Franz's company had been updated by his son William early in the 20th centrury by some shrewd marketing in the american market which helped established the Goebles company in Germany.

The 1930s were a time of great political unrest in Germany, and Franz Goebel was keen to remind the planet of the innocence that could be found in the observation of children at play. This image of childhood innocence was perfectly captured by M.I. Hummel, who Franz discovered and was able to get in touch with. Sister Hummel's works were pictures of country children in playful settings that were printed as art cards.

Franz decided to use these images as the basis for a new set of figurines. Permssion was sought from the Convent of Siessen, and Franz was introduced to clay models the Convent had createds based on the works of M.I. Hummel.A The Sisters granted Goebel sole rights to the works, and allowed him to use them as inspiration for his art. The combination of personal approval by Sister Hummel and a type of earthenware pioneered by Franz was commenced in the 1920s.

  • Mould Number from Goebel Factory
  • Goebel Trademark - WIll Be Different Depending on Era

The Specific Value of Individual Hummel Figurines

It is possible that your Hummel Figurine, depending on the specific model, could be valued at hundreds or even thousands of pounds/dollars. If you own "Little Goat Herder" then chances are you've got a really collectible little item. Remember however that the condition of the item will affect it's overall value, so try and maintain your piece in as mint condition as possible. Another thing to consider is that potential buyers may not offer you the real value of your Hummel figurine since they want to maximise their potential profits, especially if they plan to resell the item themselves.

Hummel Figurines Today

Being a traditionalist company, the Hummel figurine company employs the same standards and practices today as it has always done. There are a number of stages a Hummel figurine goes through from conception to creation. First, one of the works of Sister M.I. Hummel is carefully studied by a master sculptor from the Goebel company.

One of these works will typically be a drawing or a painting. Then, using the fine imagination only available to true master sculptors, the two dimensional image is recreated in three dimensions. Once these details are set in clay, and always in the style as approved by Sister Hummel, the real work of sculpting the artwork takes place. A typical scultping can take weeks or months, with the end product being a beautiful work of art that is presented to the Artistic Board at the Convent of Siessen.

From there, the sculptor and a master mouldmaker decide on how and where to cut the figurine so the process of creating a mould can begin. Just one hummel figurine can have as many as 40 seperate cuts. From here, the pieces are embedded in clay and covered in a plaster of paris solution. From here many plaster moulds are made, which results in a working model. At the end of this process, another model is made, which can be used to create the ceramic article.

Third, a liquid ceramic is poured into the moulds, with any moisture being absorbed by the plaster. This creates a hard but hollow ceramic shell that can be recreated into a figurine. This is glued together with the remaining cermaic and smoothed at the seams, before drying.

There is a three stage firing process, which ranges from 2100f to 1870f. This is a long process to avoid damage from sudden changes in temperature.

Using special hues based on the M.I. Hummel artworks, the figurine is then painted, fired again, and then taken through a massive selection of quality control checkpoints before going on sale to a great new home like yours.
